With the establishment of the first settlements, colonial biologists finally had the opportunity to study extrasolar life under more-or-less Earthlike conditions. Beginning from the studies of extremophiles on Old Earth, colonial biologists sought to progress through the discovery and classification of fauna on this world in a logical progression, from abiogenesis to taphonomy to biosphere. Initially, study of the current native lifeforms was limited to dissection and the extremely rare living specimens. In a matter of years, however, research in alien biology expanded into the realms of ethology, homeostasis, genetics, mycology, pathology and many others. As with most initial research on this planet, the goal was to learn how to survive and thrive here; only in recent decades has colonial study of the alien lifeforms turned to uncovering how to adapt to co-existence within a shared biosphere.

In Universe information Edit
Studies of Alien Biology started soon after planetfall. Nobody felt secure not knowing what exactly local wildlife consists of, and how could it be damaged, if need be. Preliminary expeditions have proven dangerous enough for people to be clear that humanity needs to know as much as possible for local life, if it is to survive.
But as studies progressed, scientists were more and more marveled at the ingenuity of nature - of the myriad ways it found to produce life under conditions so different from our own. While alien biology concentrated initially on dissecting indigenous species and learning how their organisms worked, it now started to move forward - into finding ways to adapt human activities to the alien nature. The results were more than promising, and soon brought this science into the forefront of human activity here.
