A highly developed banking system is one of the cornerstones of an advanced civilization. Banks lend money to individuals or groups, providing capital for industrial and real estate development. Banks also contribute to the economic growth of a city or region by stimulating the development of production facilities.
- Banks have always been highly regulated in order to protect their client's investments, dating as far back as Hammurabi's Code. In his ancient code, Hammurabi stated that if a citizen was in debt, but his crops - a Babylonian's main source of income - failed, the repayment of that debt could be put off until the following year.
- Banks in Switzerland are renowned for guarding the privacy of their customers. This tradition can be traced back to the Middle Ages, but it was not until 1934 that laws were passed requiring Swiss banks respect the privacy of their clientele.
