The Carthaginian empire was famous for sending elephants eastwards over the Alps to threaten Rome. Although they suffered many casualties, they succeeded in defeating the Romans at Cannae, assisted by Gaulish allies. However, they did not succeed in conquering the city of Rome and thus ultimately failed.
