StrategyEdit

Cathedrals boost more 20xCulture5 Culture than the other religious buildings. Indeed, in Gods & Kings, the Cathedral comes with +3 20xCulture5 Culture bonus and an added Artist Specialist slot.

In Brave New World, the Cathedral has been overhauled so that it only generates +1 20xCulture5 Culture, and no longer has the Artist Specialist slot. Still, the Cathedral is the best religious building for boosting 20xCulture5 Culture, because each Cathedral now has one slot for Great Work of Art, which makes up for the changes made to the building.

Note that you can only purchase a Cathedral in one of your own cities in which your faith is the majority (i.e. it has your religious symbol to the right of its name).

Historical InfoEdit

The Cathedral is a form of Christian church differentiated by the presence of the Bishop's throne. The Latin term "Cathedra" means "chair," in reference to the throne itself - the cathedral then being the building containing this throne. Most cathedrals feature a unique architectural style when compared to other surrounding structures, frequently becoming noted landmarks within the area. While primarily used as places of worship, cathedrals are also host to varying social functions within the community.

TriviaEdit

Historically, in western Europe and England in particular, having a cathedral makes the difference between a city and a town.
