The original Celtic people or Celts were hailed as the fathers of Europe and lived in the British Isles, France, the Iberian Peninsula, Central Europe, and central Turkey (Galatia). Many placenames in Europe still derive from the Celtic inhabitants, and many of the roads once attributed to the Romans are now recognized as having been created by the Celts. Indeed, the Irish word for a path or a way is still 'Slí', deriving from the Old Irish and proto-Celtic verb *sleget- meaning to hew or chop down. Centuries of persecution, beginning with Julius Caesar's Gallic Wars, led to the latinization of the continental Celts and the near extinction of the Celtic peoples altogether. Areas where Celtic languages remain widely spoken include parts of the British Isles and Brittany in France. Revived languages exist in the Isle of Man and Cornwall. Ireland is currently the only independent Celtic nation, with the first official language being Irish Gaelic.
