After basic shelter, the church was likely the most important building of any colony. Spanish and English colonists in particular carried with them significant religious fervor. Catholic monks traveling abroad in the name of God and country helped create many of New Spain's most important institutions, including numerous monasteries, cathedrals and the New World's first university. In the English colonies, Puritans, Quakers, and Catholics alike started new lives in order to worship in peace, bringing with them all shapes of new religious buildings.
