Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) have been around since the early 21st Century; on Old Earth GMOs produced most of the food in the wake of the Great Mistake. Upon planetfall, colonial scientists began programs to develop new cisgenic plants and “enhanced” fish and herd mammals adapted to local conditions. Using techniques developed for this endeavor, genetic engineers soon produced GMOs with other beneficial traits, such as alien-Terran chimeras, bacteria that produce pharmaceuticals, and companion animals with heightened intelligence. This in turn has led to efforts to create “custom-built” plants and animals from the DNA-level in hopes of producing human-compatible lifeforms that can be released into the remaining wild habitats. Such flora and fauna would, theoretically, prepare this planet for the spread of adapted humans.
