The Huscarl is a unique melee unit of the Anglo-Saxon English civilization from the 1066: Year of Viking Destiny scenario in Civilization V. It replaces the Longswordsman and requires Iron Iron.

Game Info[]

Unique melee unit of the Anglo-Saxon English civilization. Replaces the Longswordsman. Requires Iron Iron.

  • Special traits:
    • Cover I promotion
    • Bonus vs Mounted (50)

Strategy[]

Huscarls are the backbone of Anglo-Saxon England's defense against foreign invaders. Their innate Cover I promotion and bonus against mounted units, which represent the shield walls that they form in battle, allow them to withstand the attacks of ranged and mobile units. They can even hold their own against Berserkers in melee combat, and a Huscarl fortified in a Citadel presents a truly mighty defense for attackers to breach. However, Huscarls require Iron Iron, and sustained attacks will wear them down. If you don't have the resources to field large numbers of Huscarls, be sure to keep the ones you have well-supported with Crossbowmen and Pikemen.

Civilopedia entry[]

The Anglo-Saxon Huscarls, the medieval equivalent of the modern bodyguard, were professionally trained and well-compensated soldiers who served the king and other nobility. Equipped with waist-length chainmail coats known as "Byrnies," and typically armed with battle-axes, the Huscarls were an intimidating defensive force throughout the 11th and 12th centuries.
