Humanism is a social policy in Civilization V. It is part of the Rationalism tree.

Another of the necessary bases for development of scientific thought is the concept of Humanism. When one knows that it is the most important thing in the Universe, and can develop for his own sake, and not for the sake of a master or a deity, one can reach heights never before thought possible!

Strategy

This is another Policy for getting a particular kind of Great Person faster. Nothing too exciting about it. Nevertheless, the Policy is important both for scientific development, and for continuing to more powerful Policies higher up the Rationalism tree.

Civilopedia entry

Humanism is the philosophy that says that the human being is the most important thing in the world. There are no "higher beings" or supernatural powers that humans owe allegiance to or who give us guidance or wisdom. There's just us. Humanism has been around in one form or another since ancient Greece, and it also appears in Asian and Indian writings some two to three thousand years ago. It made a strong reappearance in the Renaissance, and remains a powerful philosophical force today.
