The Incan Empire (called Tawantinsuyu in Quechua) stretched from Ecuador to Central Chile at its greatest extent. Its Capital was Cuzco. It was the largest empire that pre-Columbian South America had ever seen. The Empire began in 1438 and ceased to exist when it was conquered by the Spanish conquistador Francisco Pizarro in 1533. Its last Emperor, Atahualpa was executed by the Spanish. Incan resistance was finally crushed in 1572. Today, there are still descendents of the people who were ruled by the Inca, living in Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, and Argentina. They speak the Quechua languages.
