This Mehal Sefari is purely defensive in nature, supporting the tactical advantages of the Ethiopians as a whole. It can really make the life of any army trying to attack the Ethiopian heartlands miserable. It is also generally stronger in rough terrain.
This unit retains its special combat bonus after being upgraded, so train as many of them as you can before researching Replaceable Parts. By doing so, you can ensure that you will have a strong army to defend your capital for the remainder of the game.
The Drill I promotion can turn out to be more powerful than it looks: if these units are trained in a city with a Barracks, Armory, and Military Academy combined with either the Brandenburg Gate or the Total War tenet of the Autocracy ideology, Mehal Sefari turn into excellent rough terrain fighters that can have access to advanced promotions like March and Blitz. Given the promotions and the technology requirements, Mehal Sefari, Minutemen, and Samurai are the only three non-Zulu units which can acquire those powerful promotions right away without the need for Alhambra.

Originally serving as the personal bodyguards for the emperors of Ethiopia, the Mehal Sefari grew to become a formidable brigade of the Ethiopian military. Consisting of specialized units of infantry, cavalry, artillery and marksmen, the Mehal Sefari's status as the elite force of Ethiopia was ensured by the rigorous training and modern equipment provided to them.
