The applications of nanotech, the engineering of functional systems on the molecular scale, are as varied as the pursuits of modern life. A few decades ago, colonial scientists discovered methods for applying quantum-sized effects, where the electronic properties of solids are altered with reductions of particle size, to certain materials found only on this planet. The result was mass production of fullerenes, nanotubes, rotaxanes, quantum dots and other molecular structures; these in turn are used to create catenanes, quantum wells, nanocrystals and the like. Engineering passive and responsive nano-materials, programmable matter, nanobeacons, molecular electronics and other constructs was the next step to creating nano-machines of many types with many functions, from replication to repair to micro-construction. In the realm of consumer products alone – everything from textiles to sports equipment – nanotechnology has altered the quality of life dramatically. The potential in other pursuits is staggering to contemplate.
