The Renaissance Era is an era that is based on the Renaissance in Europe, which was a rebirth of Greek and Roman culture. It is the fourth era of the game.

Whoever desires to found a state and give it laws, must start with assuming that all men are bad and ever ready to display their vicious nature, whenever they may find occasion for it.
–Niccolò Machiavelli

In the country of the blind, the one-eyed man is king.
–Desiderius Erasmus

Do you not know, my son, with what little understanding the world is ruled?
–Pope Julius III

Game InfoEdit

This is THE era of exploration. The Astronomy technology finally allows your sea units to traverse oceans and lets you explore the rest of the world and discover other players and City-States. As a result, diplomacy enters a brand new, global phase with the founding of the World Congress and its work. Nations now realize how important is to know what others think, and start using Espionage.

Sea warfare will get an enormous development in this era, as well as sea trade and infrastructure. Get ready for epic battles in the oceans! Another interesting development on the military front, the invention of gunpowder, finally ends the domination of Iron at the front lines, allowing players without this resource to field stable armies.

Other PropertiesEdit

The Freedom and Rationalism social policy trees are unlocked. (In both of the expansion packs, however, Freedom is not unlocked in this era.)

When starting a game in the Renaissance Era, you receive two Settlers, one Worker, three Pikemen, 300 20xCulture5 Culture, and 50 20xGold5 Gold. Venice gets a Merchant of Venice instead of the extra Settler. When a city is founded it begins with a population of 2 and contains a Granary, Monument, Shrine, and (if on the coast) Lighthouse.
