Station (CivBE)

Station icon

Stations are minor entities with which the players can trade. They are like Cities or Outposts in that they occupy one hex, but they do not have any units nor do they claim any territory by culture. Normal rules for City placement apply (e.g. you cannot establish an Outpost within three hexes of a Station).

Stations may land on the planet at any time. They are looking to trade with the players, and if nobody comes forward within a given period of time, they pack their belongings and move to a new location on the planet. Only one city per each civilization can trade with a given Station simultaneously.

When you trade with a Station, the Station is promoted to the next Tier. When your trade route expires and you establish a new one, you get better deals the higher the Tier of the Station. The stations have three Tiers, shown in the table below.

Stations can be attacked, after which they will never trade with the attacker again. They have ranged defense like cities, but produce no units. They cannot be captured, only destroyed. When destroyed they yield a reward to the attacker and leave behind a Derelict settlement.

Civilopedia entry[]

Although only the largest organizations, nations, and corporations could afford the resources, personnel and expertise to outfit a full colony mission during the Seeding, many lesser entities managed to launch small endeavors to establish stations devoted to specific tasks.

Having made planetfall, these groups would pursue their goals with near fanaticism, often existing at the tolerance of the major colonies growing around them. The stations managed to survive for decades through trading with the colonists, offering expertise or materials that the colony desired or needed.

Frequently competition for the station’s trade between competing colonies could be fierce, even violent. When colonial expansion or lack of trading opportunities brought hardship to the station masters, they were not averse to moving on. Indeed, initial landings on many unexplored planets during the Seeding were first made by the adventurous and rambunctious station masters seeking wealth, knowledge or simply fame.
